Local hockey club, the Vail Mountaineers, is gearing up to start their 42nd season on the ice. The Vail Mountaineer Hockey Club provides youth hockey opportunities for all ability levels in the Eagle County area for both boys and girls. Teams include both competitive travel teams and recreational in-house programs for youth ages 8 – 15. VMHC will be starting this season with a new director at the helm, Zach Blom. “This is an exciting time for our Club,” says VMHC Board Director, Casey Parliament. “VMHC has had a huge influx of local youth playing hockey, and our Club has grown to over 180 skaters. With this new resurgence of participation and a new director, we think that the 2017-18 season will be our best one yet.”
Zach Blom comes to the Vail Valley after coaching and directing full-time for the past nine seasons with the Colorado Thunderbirds, most recently as Director of Development. During his tenure with the T-Birds, he also served as Director of Skill Development at Littleton Hockey for four years, as well as assistant coaching Regis Jesuit High School to a National Championship in 2015, a State title in 2016, and a State runners-up finish in 2017. Originally from Denver, Zach first moved to the Valley in high school to play for the Vail Avalanche Midget AAA team before moving on to Junior A and eventually the University of Denver, winning an NCAA Div. I National Championship with the Pioneers in 2005, as well as earning Scholar Athlete recognition 2005-08 and a BA from DU’s Korbel School of International Studies.
“To be able to come back to Vail to lead and contribute to this amazing community is a dream come true,” Blom said. “I’m deeply honored to be a part of the Mountaineers family and thrilled at the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of the young people in this valley.” When he’s not at the rink, Zach enjoys being with friends and family, outdoor adventures, and great storytelling.
The Vail Mountaineer Hockey Club new season registration is currently open. Early season practices are being offered currently and team evaluations and placements begin the week of September 11th. Teams participate in the Continental Divide Youth Hockey League (CDYHL) competing against other mountain resort and western slope teams during the season. VMHC hosts two local tournaments in Vail and Eagle during the season. The 38th annual Vail Sportsmanship Tournament occurs during the first three weekends in November and the Vail MLK Girls Tournament occurs over Martin Luther King Weekend in January 2018. Accolades from last season include the Bantam B Team finishing its season as 2016-17 State Champs, Squirt B Team finishing as 2016-17 State Champs, and the U12 Girls Team rounding out their season as MSGHL 2016-17 Runners-Up.
