This month, Walking Mountains Science Center in Avon hosted an Earth Day Essay Contest for local students in grades 3-12! Essays were due 4/11, and had to address the following prompt: “Describe your vision for new and creative ways to help our community live in harmony on Planet Earth. Think BIG, but practical – what kinds of changes would you like to see that could really make a difference in our valley?

AWESOME prizes will be awarded to three winners, one in each age division:

Grades 3-5: a brand new Android tablet

Grades 6-8: another brand new Android tablet

Grades 9-12: a special edition, custom designed Walking Mountains Weston snowboard

Winners will be announced on Earth Day, 4/22.

Walking Mountains is also holding an Earth Day open house at the Energy Resource Center on 4/22 from 4 – 6:30pm to learn more about how new light bulbs and simple fixes at home can reduce your energy use as well as increase comfort.  They are offering half off energy assessments for everyone who signs up at the Science Center, so please visit to learn more.

Environmentalists from the past, along with their groundbreaking stories, will be featured in a evening film at 6:30pm at the Science Center.  A Fierce Green Fire: The Battle for a Living Planet, part of the Sustainable Community Film Series sponsored by the Town of Avon, features the stories from pioneers of the environmental movement as they share their trials and tribulations.
